GEORGIAN BAY

HISTORY  |  GEOLOGY  |  WILDLIFE  |  SUMMER RETREATS

The Thirty Thousand Islands region of Georgian Bay is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Moose, deer, black bear, wolves, foxes, osprey, blue herons and the Massasauga rattlesnake are just a few of the species that can be found, and sometimes viewed from the ship, among the island wilderness. The Massasauga rattlesnake is the one species most intimately connected to Georgian Bay. In fact, Georgian Bay is the only place in Canada where these venomous snakes exist. While always garnering a great deal of attention from cottagers, the Massasauga is now attracting a different type of attention since it has been placed on the endangered species list.
